An Art Lesson About Food?

So, doing a nutrition lessons with my art students has been more rewarding than I anticipated. When an 8th grade student told me the other day they brought a water for lunch instead of a soda, it made my heart happy. When a parent texted me and told me her daughter was in the kitchen reading nutrition labels, I felt like my job really matters. Today is a rewarding day! Today I am cooking rutabagas, leeks, and plantains for my 6th grade kids to try tomorrow. They will also be digging into papaya, 2 types of mango, and kiwis. I have a beet, carrots, spinach, rosemary, and kale from my garden for them to hold and smell. The point of this lesson is give students the opportunity to try new things, be a little more open minded to healthy foods they may enjoy. I want to help them gain back control of what they put in their growing bodies. I feel that the American food system today is failing our kids and wanted to do something real about it. I hope this stuff sticks with them!
